My story is unique, but there are countless stories like mine.
At the age of 3, I was diagnosed with a stage 3 Wilms’ tumor which had metastasized to other lymph nodes. I underwent intensive chemo and radiation, which were debilitating – but ultimately could not keep the cancer from spreading. Too weak to endure further treatment, I was placed in hospice and told I had just months to live.
Offered the chance of a wish, I wished to be a princess and set off for Give Kids The World Village with my family. And that’s where everything changed. At first too weak to walk, eat or speak, I spent the first few days in bed, unaware of the fun and adventure that awaited outside my villa. As the week progressed, something magical happened; I regained my strength, my appetite and my sense of childlike wonder. I closed my eyes to the sad black-and-white world of my illness and opened them again to a world full of color.
I began walking, playing and then running – from one fantastical venue to another. We had ice cream for breakfast; rode the carousel endlessly; splashed in the pool; and danced at the nightly parties. For the first time since my diagnosis, we all started laughing again. We were so busy having fun, we forgot about my prognosis. We started to have hope.
Back home in Wisconsin, something remarkable happened. Encouraged by my improved energy, doctors performed a scan and were shocked to discover that my tumor had shrunk! And after one final round of chemo, I was declared cancer-free. My doctors said it was a miracle…but I knew it was the magical medicine of Give Kids The World that saved my life. Today, I am 26, healthy, and proof positive of the power of hope.
Miracles happen every day at the Village – and you can help. Your donation today will help fund unforgettable wish vacations, create priceless memories, and inspire hope for families like mine. Please give it today.
